Fieldwork No. 03 — Cardiff Met SU Sport
A year as Social Media & Graphic Design Intern — one identity, every club, every week.
This is the project that proves range at volume. Running social media and graphic design for every sports club under Cardiff Met Student Union — across Instagram and Facebook, for a full academic year — meant one visual identity had to flex across dozens of teams without ever losing consistency, react to results and audience engagement in real time, and scale up to the two biggest nights of the year: Varsity and the Sports Awards.
The Problem
How do you keep a single visual system recognisable across dozens of different teams, colours, and kits — every week, without it going stale or generic?
How do you build content that responds to real results and real audience engagement in the moment, rather than just filling a content calendar?
How do you coordinate a photographer, manage where their shots end up, and deliver the two biggest nights of the year under someone else's direction?
The Thinking
01 — Fixtures & Matchday, Every Sport
The same torn-paper diagonal, bold condensed headline, and logo lockup, reused every week — but the colour and photography flex to whichever team is playing. Water polo, netball, rugby, basketball, athletics, tennis, football all run through the identical template without ever looking repeated.
02 — Team of the Week: A Live Conversation
Team of the Week wasn't scheduled content — it ran on a live audience poll almost every week there was a BUCS match. A vote decided the winner, then a reveal story closed the loop, before the winning team got its own announcement post.
Beyond the Scoreline
Keeping the page feeling current meant more than results — seasonal moments, athlete welfare, and team send-offs all got the same design attention as matchday content.
03 — Leading the Pipeline
For Varsity and the Sports Awards, the job extended past design. Working under the Head of Media and Marketing, I took the photographer's shots, sorted them into the right files for each sport's designers, and built the bigger deliverables directly — Captain Cards where each captain shared their message ahead of Varsity, and the nomination content for the Sports Awards.
The Work
Varsity
Sports Awards
A different register entirely — full black-and-gold gala branding for a black-tie night, from nomination cards through to the physical programme on the table.
The Extra Mile
Alongside the weekly content, I assisted the university's sports photographer on a rolling headshot programme — helping set up and break down a lightweight portable rig, plain backdrop and soft even lighting, that could go up anywhere on campus. Athletes signed up per sport and team rather than all in one go, so the day-to-day was about supporting the setup and keeping things running smoothly as each team came through.
The Result
2,000+
New Followers Gained Across the Year
Beyond the numbers, the role proved a different kind of range — running a design system at scale, keeping content alive week to week, and stepping up to lead a small production pipeline for the two biggest nights on the sporting calendar.
